Why You Can Be Your Greatest Critic
Have you ever been in a situation when you are simply not satisfied with your actions or decisions in life? Are you often too hard on yourself when you don’t meet your own expectations? Well, you are not alone – everybody has these feelings from time to time. Sometimes not being satisfied with your results can spur you on to improve your performance. Nobody knows your own potential better than you do, so you just may be your greatest critic.
When you are being critical on yourself, look at it from a different perspective.Instead of being disappointed, use it to your advantage. Make the most out of what you have observed about your actions and your decisions and learn from it. There are a few reasons why you can be your greatest critic:
1. You Challenge Yourself
Criticisms are everywhere, solicited or not. When others give you criticisms, they only see what is on the outside – the external factor. It can be your action, the result of your decision or the repercussion of both. However, when you become your critic, you assess your actions and decisions; you get to have a perspective of both the external and the internal. You see your actions and decisions, but you also know why you acted that way and why you came up with those decisions. This way, you can challenge yourself to work harder and better and make better decisions.
2. Re-establish Self Trust
Being your greatest critic brings some self-doubt. This doubt allows you to self-evaluate, weigh the pros and cons, to review the resources on hand and the choices that were available. It helps you clear your mind and make a thorough assessment of your decisions, and for you to rebuild self-trust. You then have the opportunity to be more confident to act and make better decisions in the future. Trusting yourself is about being assured that you won’t make the same mistake again.
3. Encourage and Motivate
Criticising yourself can bring out the best in you. It makes you want to do better. Healthy criticism allows you to start over, taking on a different path for hopefully a better outcome. It motivates you to improve. With each small improvement, it takes you a step closer to being a more realised version of you.
4. Think Outside the Box
Allowing yourself to become your critic makes you aware of your capabilities and the different possibilities available. It makes you explore the “What ifs” of your situation. And when you do, you get to see the alternatives and options available. It allows you to think outside the box and figure out what went wrong, or what could be better. You always want to improve, be better, do better and decide better. It’s important not to dwell on the negative or feel that what you were doing was wrong. It should be seen as a way forward, a path for improvement. You always want to wake up and be the better version of what you were yesterday.
There can be many reasons why you should realise that you can be your greatest critic. You can always start afresh or pick it up from where you left off.
Improving oneself should be our journey, and we should work hard in trying to get where we want to be. This is true success.
